Lightning and heavy rain hits Karachi

Widespread rain expected in upper Punjab, KP, Islamabad, Kashmir, and Gilgit Baltistan during the next 24 hours. Karachiites witnessed spells of heavy rain across the metropolis on Sunday evening and Monday morning. The downpour limited citizens’ movement, reduced business activities, whereas traffic jams were also observed on various roads. Till 10am on Monday, Karachi had received 20mm to 31mm rainfall in different areas. “Another spell is, however, expected on January 29 and 30 due to low air pressure in the coming days,” said Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) official Rashid Ahmed. Office goers and daily wage earners did face difficulties as public transport was largely not available in the city, while many of the school buses and van drivers also preferred not to pick students. First human rights TV channel vows to ‘give voice to voiceless’

LONDON: The world’s first television channel dedicated to human rights was launched in London on Tuesday with a promise to deliver hidden stories ignored by mainstream media into people’s living rooms. The International Observatory of Human Rights (IOHR) said its web-based channel would bring human rights issues to audiences in over 20 countries across Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. “There are so many people in the world who cannot speak up, and it seems to be getting worse and worse,” IOHR director Valerie Peay told the Thomson Reuters Foundation at the official launch at London’s Frontline Club. “You have got a lot of niche channels out there, but so far not one dedicated to human rights. Veere Di Wedding director Shashanka Ghosh will be helming the musical Remember the endearing 2014 Hollywood musical  Begin Again  starring Mark Ruffalo, Keira Knightley and Adam Levine? Guess what? It's getting a Hindi remake you never knew you wanted but now can't stop thinking about! The Indian adaptation will be directed by  Veere Di Wedding  director Shashanka Ghosh; the yet to be titled flick will be produced by Bhushan Kumar and Vikram Malhotra. Zama Jawandoon , an organisation working for women's rights, had organised the 'peace rally' that was scheduled to begin from Peshawar's Hayatabad neighbourhood on Saturday. According to the event's organiser, at least 35 women were slated to participate in the rally and they had also invited people from the transgender community. But the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam – Fazl (JUI-F) and other religious parties on Friday announced they would stage a protest against the rally at the Bagh-e-Naran in Hayatabad. EXHIBITION: DRAWING PASSIONS

As artists seek new and innovative mediums to articulate their ideas, traditional mediums, such as drawing, tend to get pushed to the periphery of the art world. Keeping this in mind, an exhibition of artworks by Shazia Qureshi and Danish Ahmed allows for a reconsideration of drawing as an ever-evolving medium of expression. The show titled Proximity: Conversation 1 and curated by Roohi Ahmed is the first in a series of exhibitions that emerged from the idea of impromptu conversations that develop through the interaction of two diverse bodies of work. The two featured artists employ diverse approaches to drawing while both remain situated within the realm of the surreal and the abstract. Ahmed’s work adopts a language of precision, with geometric shapes rendered in varying shades of grey.
